6 Signs your Air Conditioner needs Repairs

When you’re not feeling well, your body tells you by developing a fever or being tired. That way, you know what to do to get your body back to feeling great. When your home isn’t feeling well, it tries to tell you too! When your home needs repairs or replacements of its systems and appliances, it will tell you. All you need to do is learn the signs! Over the next few weeks, Landmark Home Warranty is going to be posting articles that teach you how your home’s systems and appliances let you know that they need to be repaired or replaced. At the end, we’ll post a handy infographic that combines each of these lists to create an ultimate guide for recognizing the signs of necessary home repair. In this post, Landmark Home Warranty will go over some telltale signs that your air conditioner needs to be repaired or replaced.

For many of us who live in a warmer state, air conditioning is a necessity. Without it we would probably melt into puddles, so when it’s not working, we can definitely tell. Luckily, air conditioners usually tell homeowners when they need repairs or maintenance. Here are some of the way that your air conditioner will let you know it needs some professional care.

The age of your air conditioner may be a sign all by itself. Most air conditioner units last 10 to 15 years. If your air conditioner is 10 years old or more it may be on its last leg. Pay attention to it more frequently in order to see if it needs maintenance. If it does fail from wear and tear, having a home warranty plan that covers air conditioners is a good idea. With a home warranty, you only pay $60 for repair or replacement of many home systems and appliances like air conditioners. The air conditioner must have failed from normal wear and tear.

If your air conditioner isn’t blowing as much air, it could mean that the blower fan is failing or has failed. If this is the case, and you have a home warranty company, you should call them to see if a blower fan failure will be covered with your home warranty plan.

If there is a large puddle underneath your air conditioning unit, this is a huge sign that maintenance is needed. Leaking air conditioners usually indicate a drain tube malfunction. Drain tubes move the condensation in the air conditioner away from the machine, and can sometimes be blocked. This is something that warrants a call to an air conditioning repair service.

Does your air conditioner make squealing or grating sounds when it turns on? These could be fan belts or machinery that is failing. Most of the time, odd noises will be accompanied with warm or weak airflow.

Is the air coming out of your air conditioner smelly? This could mean mold or mildew growing in your air conditioner, which is usually the sign of a leak.  A must smell could also be a sign of a filter needing to be changed. If the air smells foul, it can also be a sign of burned out wiring. If the wiring has burned out on your unit, and you have a home warranty plan, call your company to see if such a thing is covered in your plan.

One of the most obvious signs of an air conditioner needing professional service is your unit blowing uncool air or not turning on. If either of these things occurs, call an air conditioning repair person or, if you have a home warranty, call your home warranty company. If the unit failed from normal wear and tear, you can save thousands of dollars on repairs and replacements by only paying a $60 service call fee.

If you have a home warranty, make sure to get an air conditioner tune up before summer so you can check up on each of these signs, and make sure they’re fixed before you need your air conditioner. For more information on home warranties, go to Landmark’s main page at www.LandmarkHW.com
